Video games are good for children.
+Technology specifically developed for the purpose of enhancing cognitive abilities, such as infant-directed media including the ‘‘Baby Einstein’’ collection or various ‘‘brain games’’ designed for adults, may lead to no effects or, worse, may lead to unanticipated negative effects (Owen et al., 2010; Zimmerman et al., 2007). Meanwhile, technological applications that on the surface seem rather mindless (such as action video games) can result in improvements in a number of basic attentional, motor, and visual skills (Green and Bavelier, 2008; Greenfield, 2009).
Durkheim’s theory of suicide
+
- Egoistic suicide is a product of excessive individuation. When an individual isn’t sufficiently integrated into society, or rather society’s norms and values are not sufficiently present in the individual for them to survive in society. Such a lack of social support and guidance can (according to Durkheim) particularly be found in unmarried (/childless) males, who are more likely to commit suicide than married males or parents.
- Altruistic suicide occurs when society is overly integrated into the individual. When the values and goals of the society of which the individual partakes are seen as more important than the individual needs, a veritable self-sacrifice for the purpose of serving society can occur. A prime example of this are soldiers who sacrifice themselves. Even not in war times the suicide rates among soldiers are higher than those among civilians.
- Anomic suicide is linked to social or economical upheaval. A sudden deregulation and loss of structure can lead to a state in which the individual does not know the limits of what it is acceptable for him to hope for and aspire, and thus finds themselves in a constant state of disappointment due to reality coming crashing down on them. Such a pattern can most impressively be seen in the amount of lottery winners who commit (or attempt) suicide. Sudden enormous wealth leads to a lack of boundaries and sense of what is sensible and feasible, and is therefore a prime example for the conditions of an anomic suicide.
- Fatalistic suicide is exactly the opposite of anomic suicide. An individual livng in an overly oppressive society with little to no freedom (for example in prison) might prefer to die than to carry on living under such conditions that leave no room for personal aspirations.
